We were excited to visit the heartland of Hongkong Post with our children and their parents in early March. The Central Mail Centre is located in Kowloon Bay which handles over 3 million local mails every day. There are Letter Sorting Machines in the centre which are able to sort the printed addresses on different mails. After sorting, mails would be delivered to different post offices and then to postmen. However, small letters and packets require to be handled manually. Postmen are required to pass an examination before handling this job. The examination consists of 900 questions and the passing score is 891. This high standard requirement enables Hongkong Post to provide on time and reliable services ── 99% of mails can be delivered on the next working day.
We all have learnt a lot and were amazed by what we have seen. Hei Hei, one of the children, told his mother after the visit, “I want to be a postman to serve the community.”
